A Quickie Q & A

In our Harvest Basket class yesterday, a got a few questions about how I come up with a project for a class. How do I know how much wool to use? Which wool is good for clothing or vessels? It turned into a fun discussion! When I explained some of the steps and processes including trial and error, making samples, drawing things out, taking measurements, creating the right shape of resist, calculating shrinkage or scaling the project up or down, it hit me just how much goes on behind the scenes before the project gets to class! Here’s a few photos of some of these steps. (I have to say, I love all the pieces to the puzzle!)

  1. I get loads of color and texture inspiration from nature, especially the beach!

  2. My best tool is my phone camera so I can measure and record each step as I go.

  3. You can never make too many samples! Here I’m getting ready to test the feltability of these silks and fabrics (for the Wavy Warmer class!)

  4. I make several prototypes and take note of every material, every technique, and every minute it takes to complete the project.

A Peek at Yesterday’s Harvest Basket Class

When I first started planning this class, I wondered how excited people would be about using undyed wool. I was worried that, without all the color and pizzaz, if they would want to hit the neutrals. I shouldn’t have been concerned! Our class was full and a buzz of creativity. All the baskets used 2 types of wool—BFL and Cheviot—along with simple yarns, nepps, pre-felts, and flax fiber, all in the same tones. And they all came out in different shapes with such varied designs! Thanks to all who came. I had a wonderful woolly day with you!

Here’s the current class list

Here’s my favorite inspo for a neutrals palatte…My sweetie pie Corgi, Biki!

I’m so happy to have you in my felting friends circle! Many of you send me photos of your felting pieces (or other art!) and I love it! Don’t hesitate to reach out‍ with questions about felting or classes….or just let me know what you’re working on!

Laura
