April Showers Definitely Brought May Flowers

The Fiber in the Forest Retreat was full of wonderful people, so many good fiber vibes, loads of creativity, awesome food (missing that butter cake!) and so much fun!

Hello Fiber Friends!

What a whirlwind the last month has been! Here’s a taste of what I’ve been up to, an inside look into building my big vessel, and the newest class registration is open!

I hope you are all well and doing things that feed your spirit, your inner child, and your no-limits creativity!

Classes

Our Sparkle Book Cover Class is coming up soon - Saturday, June 13th. Add a little sparkle to your journaling or create a beautiful notebook to capture your summer adventures! Spend a full, creative day crafting a unique, seamless felted book cover using the resist technique with a button closure and a matching bookmark! A hardback notebook is included, and you can refill your cover with any 6” × 8” book. I carded up some lovely blended bling batts to use just for this class! Sign up at The Eugene Textile Center

We had a blast in the Eugene class last month. Look what folks made!

Pinch Pots are back! Join me in Brookings over on the coast August 22nd and we’ll do up a playful workshop inspired by classic clay pinch pots. We’ll make small felted bowls by building up thick squares of colorful wool and embellishment fibers, then pinching up the corners with colorful rivets to form our cute bowls. Sign up at the Manley Center (scroll to Aug 22nd)

Fiber In The Forest Felting

The Eugene Textile Center’s Fiber In The Forest Retreat was amazing! And by that I mean I was in heaven being around so many creative, funny, joyful, and smart fiber nerds! If you weren’t playing in a workshop, eating delicious, home cooked meals, you were knitting, weaving, crocheting or otherwise talking about one or many fiber arts. It was a dream being around all that energy and conversation. PLUS, our felting workshop, well, shall we just say, was the bestest! These gals made the most colorful, whimsical, and beautiful table runners or wall hangings. I highly recommend this restful, artsy, and playful retreat. Join me next year! See the full photo album here!

Behind the Scenes with “Burrow”

I thought I’d share with you some tidbits of my felting process creating this 28” diameter vessel. I call it Burrow because of all the cracks, crevices, and craters I worked into it. I have wanted to do an all-neutrals palette on a vessel, so that its focus is on texture. Of course, I love it because it was so meaningful and challenging to create! I started by making thick cords to add underlying grooves, several pre-felts with scrim and various wools, along with highly-textured pieces (I call it “brain” surface design) that fit into the craters. It was part intimately-planned design and part spontaneity. If you have any questions, shoot me a note!

That’s a wrap for this newsletter-blog for May! I’m so honored to have you in my special felting friends circle. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions about felting or classes….or just let me know what you’re working on! I love hearing from you.

Warmly,

Laura
